Val Guest (1911-2006)
Val Guest was the director of the Quatermass pictures. This was undiluted British sci-fi, something rare today.
In the second Quatermass film: Quatermass 2 (a.k.a. Enemy from Space) (1957), I have a vivid memory of a scene in which very old cars are driving anachronistically into a space-age-looking oil refinery. The refinery made the cars look old, the cars made the refinery look modern.
While the special effects were primitive by today’s standards, Guest’s films had something genuine, sincere and mysterious about them he was a master of British sci-fi in the 1950s.
