Gerry (1929-2012) & Sylvia Anderson (1927-2016)
In the 1960s and 70s, Gerry Anderson, Sylvia Anderson and the imaginative and resourceful British design teams they led (including Derek Meddings), produced visually unique, amazingly convincing, sometimes ‘paranoid’ future worlds, in which the Earth was under threat from under-sea villains (Stingray [1964]), retro-metabolizing Martians (Captain Scarlet [1967]), assorted subversives (Joe 90 [1968]), human organ-stealing aliens (UFO [1969]) or passing alien cultures (Space: 1999 [1975]).
I loved the decors, the costumes, the craft, the silver, white, orange, red, yellow, blue and purple of their ‘formats’. This couple had me spellbound as a kid. …as did the music of their alchemical composer: Barry Gray.
