Giorgio Moroder (b.1940)
On a walking holiday, a girl advised me to listen to Giorgio Moroder’s score to the film Midnight Express (1978). I’ve not looked back.
Trancy and sometimes camp, his slowly modulating, growling filters and repeating basslines pulsate. He sets his low frequency oscillators to produce writhing, hemiola effects.
My favourite film scores by him are Midnight Express (1978), American Gigolo (1980) and the re-make of Cat People (1982).
Fun pop tracks are the vocoded I Wanna Rock You and Baby Blue (both 1979).
