Germaine Tailleferre (1892-1983)
I first discovered the music of Germaine Tailleferre through the French composer and artists’ group: Les Six, of which she was a member. I heard Tailleferre’s Concerto Grosso for 2 pianos, singers, saxophones and orchestra and was bowled over by it.
Her harmonies are extremely colourful. I love the way she shifts between modes. Her music is driven by humour and drama. Her piano music is very French and romantic, but light, with a contemporary twist.
Little of Tailleferre’s work has been recorded (more needs to be realized), though there is published material of her’s to enjoy.
